Medicine by Design

In the history of Medicine, hospitals are usually seen as passive reflections of advances in medical knowledge and technology. In 'Medicine by Design', Annmarie Adams challenges these assumptions, examining how hospital design influenced the development of twentieth-century medicine and demonstrating the importance of these specialized buildings in the history of architecture. At the center of this work is Montreal's landmark Royal Victoria Hospital, built in 1893. Drawing on a wide range of visual and textual sources, Adams uses the Royal Vic -along with other hospitals built or modified over the next fifty years-to explore critical issues in architecture and medicine: the role of gender and class in both fields, the transformation of patients into consumers, the introduction of new medical concepts and technologies, and the use of domestic architecture and regionally inspired imagery to soften the jarring impact of high-tech medicine.

Qué le duele. Beginning spanish for healthcare professionals

The purpose of the book is to teach healthcare professionals how to communicate, in Spanish, with Hispanic patients. This highly practical text is designed to help students and practicing professionals develop their oral communication skills. Basic grammar explanations and relevant vocabulary, with an emphasis on the construction of yes/no questions, are provided. The text focuses on highly applicable and relevant material. The exercises in each chapter begin with simple drills testing the readers recognition and comprehension of the material learned, culminating in more involved exercises (such as role-playing) geared towards the practice of Spanish in real-life scenarios. Furthermore, a CD that can be used for at-home practice accompanies the text to help improve ones listening comprehension skills. This book is adaptable to classes of different types and lengths. Some hospitals are providing six to eight-week Spanish courses of levels 1 and 2, with a total of twelve hours of instruction per level. This book is ideal for such a setting, as it could be divided into two parts: the first part for level 1, and the second part for level 2. For other types of courses, such as semester-long classes offered at community colleges or universities, this book is equally as ideal because, in its entirety, it provides more than enough material for such a class. In the second edition, students will find pre- and post-reading activities for every cultural reading selection. The pre-reading activities will help students brainstorm about their own culture and experiences; the post-reading activities will ask students to apply what they learned in the reading to different real-life scenarios, and to compare and contrast their own culture to the Hispanic one. In addition, we have added Study Tips throughout the chapters and developed a PowerPoint presentation for instructors to use in the classroom.Qu le Duele? will serve as a traditional textbook for students and as a reference tool for healthcare professionals who must speak with Hispanic patients. Emphasizing practicality, this relatively small book with a soft cover and index will allow readers to locate needed material "on the spot."

Agent Technology and E-health

Multi-agent systems are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence. In the last ten years there has been a growing interest in the application of agent-based systems in health care. Moreover, a growing European community of researchers interested in the application of intelligent agents in health care emerged as a result of the activities within the AgentCities.NET European network and the AgentLink III Technical Forum Group on Healthcare Applications of Intelligent Agents. And specially in R&D projects funded during the FP6. Thus, this book reports on the results achieved in this area, discuss the benefits (and drawbacks) that agent-based systems may bring to medical domains and society, and also to provide a list of the research topics that should be tackled in the near future to make the deployment of health-care agent-based systems a reality. Current topics of research include communication and co-operation betweendistributed intelligent agents to manage patient care, information agents that retrieve medical information from the Internet, and multi-agent systems that assist the doctors in the tasks of monitoring and diagnosis. A lot of methodological and technical problems are beginning to be discovered by the researchers that attempt to deploy agent-based systems in the medical area; just to name a few, there does not exist a universally accepted standard medical ontology, it is difficult to integrate new agent systems with legacy software, and these new agent-based systems should take into account rapidly changing national and international laws and regulations concerning the privacy of medical data and the security of the transaction of patientinformation between agents. The reader will find a comprehensive view of the field and up-to-date state-of-the-art of the research in this field in Europe.
